Twenty-five minutes down the road in Castroville, the self-declared artichoke capital of the world. Thursday afternoons at the North County Rec Center, year-round, and about as close to home as a real market gets. Come in fall, when the artichokes are the whole reason to make the trip.
The south valley's own market, Thursday evenings on Soledad Street from April through October. It is about 35 minutes down 101, deep in Salinas Valley farm and wine country, and it makes an easy pair with a first look at Mission Soledad or a run out to the Pinnacles just east of town. An evening market, so come once the heat breaks.
A relaxed Thursday evening market on the Seaside side of the bay. Summer hours run all the way to 8, so it makes a natural last stop on the way home from a Peninsula day, produce bags in the trunk.
